The Golden Moment - Recording Secrets From The Pros
By Keith Hatschek
Backbeat Books
This truly is a book for everyone interested in audio, from an author who can be
said to be totally immersed in the subject. Currently director of the Music
Management program at the Conservatory of Music, University of the Pacific,
Stockton, CA, Keith Hatschek has been interviewing audio professionals for a
number of years, and this well-illustrated volume reflects on what he has learned
from such industry heavyweights as Bruce Swedien, Richard Dodd, Ed Cherney,
Chuck Ainlay, Jimmy Douglass, Mick Guzauski, Joe Barresi, Mitch Easter, Elliot
Scheiner, Bil VornDick, Chris Lord-Alge and Bob Rock.
In The Golden Moment, these multi-platinum engineers and producers share a
vivid, behind-the-scenes collection of personal anecdotes, with Hatschek
extracting, through a series of well-thought-out questions, a wealth of how-to
advice that is destined to improve the quality of any recording. But interviews
with more than 50 engineers who revealed their various approaches to the art of
recording and just part of what this 278-page book offers. There is a collection of
sensibly edited monographs and technical bulletins on topics such as studio
acoustics, selecting A-to-D and D-to-A converters, re-dithering, monitoring and
time code.
Equally important is a seriously useful discussion on selecting microphones in
the studio, and another on “Session Tips & Techniques.” Fold in a series of
objective studio profiles and a very readable essay on “Making Money from Your
Studios,” and you begin to get the idea: “The Golden Moment” is not an
extended fan magazine, but a highly relevant collection of objective advice
and comments that we can all use during the execution of sound art.
Hatschek also covers new trends such as high resolution and podcasting, in
addition to providing information on home-brewed acoustics, producing a first-
time band, and working with vintage gear.
